At van Wijk Safaris, we are passionate about hunting. It shows in our approach as well as our knowledge and skills. van Wijk Safaris has access to great areas and concessions with excellent trophies and natural splendour.
Andries has been actively involved in hunting safaris for 18 years and together with the rest of his team they share almost 46 years’ experience in the Hunting & Touring Industry.
van Wijk Safaris is an accredited hunting outfitter. Our hunts include all the amenities, like accommodation, all meals (accompanied by excellent South Africa wines), daily laundry, well equipped hunting vehicles, skinners, trackers and support staff.
Our hunting season is from middle February to middle November.
Certain species requires a permit to hunt and export. These are clearly marked on our pricelist. We will gladly assist with obtaining these permits.
Neutral clothes are preferable for hunting. Camo is not a requirement, but is acceptable. Bring comfortable, broke in shoes/boots, as we may do a lot of walking during the course of your hunt.
Whatever your choice of weapon, be it rifle, bow, muzzle loader or handgun, we will hunt hard to get you your trophy.
If you want to hunt with your own firearm, we strongly recommend that you obtain a pre-issued permit to import your firearm into South Africa. We will gladly help with this. Should you choose not to do this we have suitable firearms to rent.
African game has a reputation as being hard to kill. That simply is not true. van Wijk Safaris recommends a .30 calibre as the lightest/smallest for plains game hunting and a .375 and up for dangerous game hunting. 60 Rounds per calibre should be sufficient. We recommend good quality bullets. Either bonded core or expanding monolithic bullets. We prefer Barnes X, Swift A-frame Bullets or similar. It is always wise to know your gun and be comfortable with it. This will ensure that you make good shots and clean kills. Shooting distance will vary, but as a general rule in the main areas your shots will be under 200 yards. The Freestate offers some opportunities for longer shots which could be anything between 250 – 350 yards
Bow Hunting involves sitting in specially constructed blinds at water holes, salt licks or other likely areas. Should the need arise we will set up Popup blinds as well as tree stands. Shooting distance is normally kept under 30 yards. van Wijk Safaris urges bow hunters to practice and be comfortable with their equipment. Only a compound crossbow with a minimum draw mass of 99lb or a long bow with a minimum draw mass of 50lb may be used. The arrows must have a minimum length of 19.7” long and must be equipped with sharpened flat steel broadheads. The broadheads must have a minimum width of 1.1” without barbs. For best results and concealment please bring full camo gear. This includes gloves and face masks.
Hunting with a handgun is exciting and fun. However South Africa’s stringent gun laws means that you will have to jump through some hoops to import your gun. Please contact us for assistance in this regard. Calibre should be at least a 357 with good quality bullets.
Muzzle loader is the traditional, old way to hunt. Regular firearm importation applies. Please note that commercial airlines are not allowed to carry Pyrodex or similar black powder pellets. It is sadly also not available in South Africa. Regular Black Powder as well as a locally made Black Powder replacement is freely available.
Hunting with semi-autos is not allowed.
We believe that skinning, field preparation and handling of your trophies is as important as the hunt. Our experienced skinners will take care of your trophies until they are delivered for packing and dipping services or to a taxidermist of your choice in South Africa.
You set the pace of your safari. We will hunt as hard as you want to, we love hunting and our experienced guides will leave you in awe with their ability and determination.
The whole van Wijk Safaris team will strive to help you exceed your African Dream!!!
